SYMPHONIC BAND

Advanced Band

Grades 7 and 8

Prerequisite:  Successful Audition

Symphonic Band serves the needs of students who have had a successful audition and who need to begin training at an advanced level.  In some cases where instrumentation warrants, a student may participate in symphonic band by invitation.  Students in this band will be required to attend rehearsals and sectionals both during and after school.

Advanced level band offers instruction to the advanced player.  In-depth study of musical styles will be realized through challenging band literature.  Rehearsals and performances outside of normal school hours will be required as a part of this course.  Students in this course form the representative-performing bands of the school.  Advanced Band focuses on the further development of technique, ensemble performance, and musical styles as presented in various concert selections.  Emphasis is placed on the sequential development of ADVANCED technical skills and on the study of related literature.  Members include woodwind, brass, and percussion.

This course requires a student materials fee as listed in FCPS Notice 5922.

AUDITIONS and CHALLENGES

(Symphonic Band and Concert Band II)

A student may choose to challenge another player within his/her section in order to obtain a higher chair.  A point system will be used to rate the students involved in the challenge.

1)  Each student participating in a challenge is required to record the challenge music on a cassette tape, or perform in front of band class.  Tapes will be collected anonymously.

2)  Audition and/or tapes are due one week after the request is made.

3)  A person can only be involved in one challenge at a time.

4)  A challenge request can only be made at the end of rehearsal with both students present.

5)  Re-challenge can be made after 2 weeks.

Note:   The director may, at his discretion, change a student’s chair position.

SECTIONALS

(Symphonic Band and Concert Band II)

Attendance is mandatory!  Participation in sectional rehearsals on a consistent basis is vital to giving a successful performance.  Sectionals are a necessity in that the director can solve problems unique to a specific grouping of instruments without other students having to sit in rehearsal needlessly.  Sectionals will be held during and after school on a regular basis.  Sectionals are usually held on late bus days, which are on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Generally students will not be asked to attend more than one sectional per week.
